Just a short trip from Eretria, Athens is an ideal place to visit while you take a day off your bike. Here we let Lillian, team GCH member and your unofficial guide, explain a typical day’s tour…..

Hi, my name is Lillian and I welcome you to a beautiful day’s walk in Athens/Greece

I’ve been living in the city since for all my life – approx 30-40 years! And I still love it. The historical center is where I chose to keep my art studio and where I hang out most of the days. This means that I’ve been everywhere, from the top of Acropolis to the most alternative areas.

Steven will drop you off right in the heart of the city, opposite of the Olympian Zeus temple .First visit will be on the rock of Acropolis and the Parthenon. No need to wait at the queue, as I will get your tickets before you arrives. The ground is uneven, so please make sure that you wear comfortable shoes. We’ll go up and enjoy the stunning view. During our ascent, I will familiarize you with some history of the monument and some architectural “secrets”. The city is all around and we’ll see some important buildings.

This will take us about an hour and a half, so at the end of this a perfect opportunity to eat the home made cheese or spinach pie that Steven will make for us.

Next comes the traditional area of Anafiotika. You will feel very lucky to have me as it is difficult, even for some locals to find their way around in this area. Make sure you have your cameras with you for many of the amazing views

With the ancient ruins and history behind us it’s time to see the more modern face of the city. We’ll walk in the small streets of plaka where we can find Greek coffee, beers or some traditional drinks such as ouzo, tsipouro or mastixa . At this point I strongly recommend keeping your selves together and not getting too drunk, as I can only carry one person!! As it is a walking tour, next, we are going to WALK towards the busy square of Monastiraki where both locals and tourists meet. Maybe grab a frozen yoghurt or the traditional street food souvlaki. If there is time, we can stroll by the alternative and vibrant area of Psiri where craftsmen used to have their workspaces.

Last but not least, is the paved street of Ermou the main Shopping district in Central Athens. At the end of this street we can find the parliament building and maybe watch the change of the guards. There also, we will find Steven and his magic van to take you back to Eretria, after this lovely day that u had!

Total hrs: 4 (more or less)

Optional alternatives: Acropolis Museum, Other archeological sites around Acropolis, Athens food market (meat and fish)
