A tour of the mythical Peloponnese

We invite you to discover the magic and ancient history of the Peloponnese.
It is not every day you get the chance to cycle a myth!!

Enjoy second to none local “filoxenia” and hospitality. The route takes you deep into the Peloponnese taking in the rich culture and history of the area. The cycling will be challenging but you will be rewarded with amazing views, varied terrain and great food as well as an insight to the culture and history.

Day 1 - Meet and Greet

NO CYCLING

You will be picked up in Athens in the morning and transferred to the starting point in Loutraki. Meet the GCH team and then enjoy a spa in therapeutic thermal waters and a 20 minute body massage to get you fully relaxed ready for the tour ahead. We will have our pre-tour briefing, as well as the opportunity to set up and check the bikes and equipment before dinner.

Day 2 – Off we go

Loutraki – Mykines – Nafplio 60 km / 590 m

A Fairly easy ride to start your tour, giving you a chance to visit the rich archaeological site in the Mykines where your tour guide will show you around . We then continue cycling towards Nafplio, the capital of the First Hellenic Republic, where we will spend the night. Enjoy dinner and an evening walking around Nafplio.

Day 3 - Filoxenia

Nafplio – Ag Ioannis 51.6km / 1109m

As you start to go into the mountains the riding gets a little bit tougher, although the scenery makes it worthwhile. Today your destination is the village of Ag.Ioannis where you will sample local life and Greek “filoxenia” staying in a traditional family stone houses. Dinner will be hosted by a local family in their home serving a Traditional meal.

Day 4 - Up to the Monastery

Ag.Ioannis – Leonidio 96.2km / 1336m

Today we head south towards the picturesque village of Leonidio for a medium level ride. We have the option upon arriving at Leonidio to continue on for a visit to the unique monastery of Panagias Elonas. This will be a climb of around 10 km with a total elevation of 518m- but well worth the visit! A 3 course dinner will refuel you ready for tomorrows ride.

Day 5 - Byzantine Castle

Leonidio – Monemvasia 91 km / 1704m

Make sure you eat a good breakfast today as you have almost 2000m of climbing to do. A 10 km climb up to an elevation of 600m before descending then following the coast south to the unique Byzantine castle of Monemvasia.

Day 6 - Shipwrecked

Monemvasia - Gythio 71.2km / 481m

A flatter ride today as you head west and arrive at the beautiful fishing town of Gythio. We will stop on the way at Valtaki beach and a chance to view the shipwreck “Dimitris” and also enjoy another dip in the sea.

Day 7 - Magical Cave

Gythio – Stoupa 62.6 km/ 1109m

Some hills again today because we know how much you will have missed them yesterday! An early start as we will get the chance to visit the spectacular underground river caves at Diros with a 40 minute guided tour before continuing your ride towards Stoupa, one of the oldest settlements in the Peloponnese.

Day 8 - Olives

Stoupa – Kalamata 52 km / 726 m

Back on the road today for a steady ride north to the 2nd largest city on the Peloponnese Kalamata, home of the famous  Kalamon olives

Day 9 - Olympia, home of the Games

Kalamata - ancient Olympia 109 KM / 935M

The last leg of the tour and a long ride finishing in Ancient Olympia, home of the Olympic Games. Lots of food and drink tonight as we celebrate the end of our tour!

Day 10  - Homeward bound

Today you will be transferred by mini bus back to Athens taking with you a lifetime of memories and experiences.

The Overview

Cycle 588Km and 7990m elevation over 8 days of cycling taking in all the spectacular scenery the Peloponnese has to offer.  Ancient archaeological sites and truly natural beauty will keep your mind off the hills.  Suitable for keen and experienced cycle tourists happy to spend long days in the saddle and willing to tackle challenging hills, this is a medium to hard level tour.

A combination of 3 and 4 star bike friendly hotels apart from Day 3 which will be village guest houses or a private villa.

Meals

Breakfast (B) will be served buffet style at the hotel or as a takeaway lunch box depending on the day’s itinerary. For lunch, you will be given energy snacks and drinks for the ride, plus there will be opportunities along the route for a lunch stop or to purchase food . Dinner (D) will be 3 course meals served with wine, beer or soft drinks, either in the hotel restaurant or in a local Taverna. With a focus on traditional Greek food using fresh local produce, in traditional Greek style most of the meals will be served sharing “family” style in the middle of the table.

All Dietary requirements can be catered for.

The remaining balance is to be paid up to 6 weeks before the tour starts.

Extra Info:

  • Exact itinerary and activities may be subject to change depending on availability
  • Distances and elevation are approx. and may vary slightly depending on exact location of destination accommodation and starting points
  • Vehicle support will be a VW T5 van with 8 passenger seats available for emergencies or support on the rides.

Difficulty:

  • The tour is a medium to high challenging tour designed for people who are experienced cyclists comfortable with cycling 6 hours a day with some challenging hills

Flight info:

  • You will have to fly to Athens international airport and aim to arrive at least one day prior to the tour start and at least one day after.
  • Hotels in Athens before and after the tour are not included
